Nassau County was hit pretty hard with a few inches of snow, so most of us spent the day digging out and watching movies. But hopefully tomorrow will be different. If the sun is shining, it’s the perfect time to take your kids over to Eisenhower Park in East Meadow for a day of snow sledding.
Sled Hill is well known around the county as the perfect sledding spot for the younger set. The hill is a long and wide and has a gentle downward slope. It’s usually filled with kids, mostly 10 and under, so it’s a perfect family fun atmosphere. Parents stand around with coffee and thermoses of hot-chocolate watching their kids have fun.
Eisenhower Park, has two entrances, one off Merrick Road and a second on Hempstead Turnpike. The park is the 930-acre flagship in the county park system. Sled Hill is located on the Merrick Avenue side, halfway through the park. Travel through the park to Parking Field #1 and Sled Hill is on the side of the other popular family destination, Safety Town.
Since children can get cold quickly while playing in the snow, dress them in lots of layers, make sure they wear a hat and bring an extra pair of gloves.
If you have a carload of kids and aren’t ready to head home after spending the afternoon sledding, check out the Aquatic Center. Originally built to host the 1998 Goodwill Games, it’s one of the largest swimming facilities in the area. The pool and on-site gym are both open to the public.
There’s also lots of family friendly restaurants right outside both of the park entrances for a quick bite before you head home.
