A shark sighting on Long Island at Overlook Beach has people jittery about venturing into the water for the July 4th, 2015 holiday weekend. On Wednesday, at Overlook Beach on Long Island a 6-foot shark was seen swimming around in the water.
The lifeguard on duty spotted the shark and immediately evacuated all swimmers and closed the beach for the day. In addition, because of the shark sighting, two nearby beaches, Cedar Beach and Gilgo Beach were closed as a precaution. There have been no shark sightings since and all lifeguards and beach personnel are on high-alert.
Overlook Beach is a scenic tranquil stretch of sand among a cluster of beaches in the Town of Babylon, just over the boarder of Nassau County. It’s been the first shark sighting this summer on Long Island. The shark didn’t come close to the shoreline, so beach personnel couldn’t determine the shark type.
