Makes four 6 – ounce servings
3 very ripe bananas
2 cups of milk
1/2 cup of half-and-half
1 teaspoon of nutmeg
1 cinnamon stick
1 cup of bittersweet chocolate chips
1 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Cut and peel the bananas into small pieces and place them in a heavy-bottomed pot. Add the milk, half-and-half, cloves and cinnamon stick. Stir gently and bring the mixture to a very low simmer. Simmer for 10 minutes and make sure that you stir the mixture every few minutes to ensure that they milk does not scorch or burn.
Remove the pot from the heat and strain the contents through a fine-mesh strainer. Use a large spoon and push as much of the banana as possible through the strainer. Pour the strained mixture back into the original pot. Place over very low hear and bring the mixture to a low simmer. Add the chocolate chips and vanilla extract and stir until all of the chocolate chips have dissolved. Pour the hot chocolate into a mug and add a dollop of whipped cream or add some marshmallows.
For the adults, if you want to turn your hot chocolate drink into a cocktail, just add 1 ounce of cognac, coffee or chocolate liquor. Delicious!
