Long Island Is Haunted!

While there are many spots you can intentionally visit to get spooked and scared on Long Island (click here for a list of them), there are several locations you may visit that you may not know have been reported sights of paranormal activity.  Here is a list of the top haunted spots on LI:

1. Raynham Hall, Oyster Bay

Originally home to the Townsends of Oyster Bay, this now museum was once a place that housed British troops.  Legend has it that British Major John Andre had a conversation in the house trying to convince Benedict Arnold to surrender his troops.  People have reported that they have seen his image there.  There have also been reports that one particular bedroom is especially chilling, and this was the room that one of his mistresses stayed in.  Many say there is a distinct smell of apple and cinnamon in the kitchen, indicating that the spirit is welcoming you into the home.  Several photographs taken here also show significant orbs, said to be indicators of spirits caught on film.

2. Sweet Hollow Road, Huntington

Long known for its chilling tales, there are several legends of reported hauntings here.  One of the most well known is the story that three boys committed suicide hanging from the overpass of the Northern State here.  It is said that as you pass under it, if you look up you will see three bodies hanging there.  Another creepy tale is that long ago a bus full of children was in a horrific accident going under the overpass.  Some say if you drive there and put your car in neutral, your car will immediately move.  Believers say this is the spirit of the children pushing your car out of harm’s way.  Finally, the third most popular legend here is of the white lady.  As legend goes, a girl was fighting with her boyfriend on the road and was pushed out of the car and killed.  Some say when driving you will see a lady in white on the side of the road and as you pass she will jump out at you.

3. Hanging Tree, Patchogue

Reports state that in colonial times those accused of witchcraft were hung from this tree.  Visitors state they have seen unexplained lights in the woods, shadows, feelings of dread, having things knocked out of their hands, and unexplained voices that are heard from recordings taken there.

4. Grumman Road, Eastern Long Island

For starters, no one knows exactly where this place is; it is not the road that comes up on any navigation systems.  Reportedly, while driving down the road, your gears shift back and forth, the radio could turn on and off or change stations, your compass may spin around, and side roads seem to disappear and reappear.  Skeptics think it may be a secret government testing area or a strong magnetic field, but I will definitely not be visiting to be the judge of that!

5. Reid’s Ice Cream Factory, Blue Point

Legend has it that a girl was raped and killed here.  If you visit, you will hear screams, cries for help, and a girl walking around in the dark.   Another story is that long ago a boy fell and died here.  People report hearing giggles and the sounds of little feet running around.

6. Kings Park Psychiatric Center

Set to be torn down soon, those who pass by reportedly hear yells and screams.  Don’t try to see it for yourself though: entry is forbidden by law.

7. Mary’s Grave, Shep Jones Road

There are many stories about what reportedly happened to Mary.  Some say she was killed by a jealous boyfriend, others she killed herself when her boyfriend did not come home from war.  Visitors state that you will see her hanging from a tree, or hear her feet dangling on the hood of your car when you pass by.  Other reports state if you drive by her home, you will see her light on in the house.  It is supposedly her spirit still waiting up to see her boyfriend come home from war.

Spooked out yet?  I am!!  If you know of another reportedly haunted LI locale, email marissa@nassauhappening.com and we’ll add it to the list!
