This has always been one of my favorite Christmas shows. Charlie Brown quietly searches for the true meaning of Christmas and when he finds it, shares it with the rest of the Peanuts gang. As the cartoon unfolds Charlie Brown is down in the dumps as he watches the over-the-top commercialization of the Christmas holiday take away from the true meaning of the season. Eventually, Linus explains the story of the birth of the Baby Jesus and the Christmas meaning becomes crystal clear.
A Charlie Brown Christmas received stellar ratings and acclaim from critics. The show has since been honored with both an Emmy and Peabody Award. The jazz soundtrack also achieved commercial success, going triple platinum in the United States. Many live theatrical versions of A Charlie Brown Christmas have been staged and there has been a recent revival of the Charlie Brown characters since this year marks an important milestone- the 50th Anniversary! A Charlie Brown Christmas special is broadcast at least twice during the weeks leading up to Christmas.
See the live version of A Charlie Brown Christmas at the NYCB Theater on December 11th at 7:00 pm.
